Had their campaign unraveling, or had there never been a binding element keeping it intact in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, only for him publicly stated that the board had failed to disclose a registration embargo they were about to receive for accounting issues. Reports that his departure was imminent were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.
The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. Matteo's Unexpected Presence
A single player continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio this season. He spent the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were attempting to stay there a while longer. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration.
